AT&T gives unlimited mobile-to-mobile to keep iPhone users

ATT echoes Sprint with unlimited mobile to mobile

AT&T pulled out one more strategy in an attempt to prevent defections to Verizon for the iPhone with an unlimited calling option. Unlimited Mobile to Any Mobile lets those who have unlimited messaging but a limited voice plan make unlimited calls to anyone in the US on a cellphone, regardless of which carrier the receiver uses. The strategy is a similar though not identical to Sprint's Any Mobile, Anytime plan.

The company hasn't said which plans will qualify but did say both families and individuals as well as existing and new customers. Rollover minutes will still be in effect.

Full details of the plan are expected on Thursday, the same day as the retail launch of the Verizon iPhone.

AT&T has repeatedly said it hasn't been afraid of the Verizon iPhone launch as it's diversifying to include more Android devices like the Motorola Atrix 4G, but it has taken a number of conspicuous steps in an attempt to retain as many customers as it can. It has started with modest steps like phone trade-ins but has escalated its efforts to include giving free MicroCells, worth $200 at retail, to prevent iPhone owners from switching due to call reception problems.
